I’m worried, and I hope I’m more worried than I need to be.
What is most bizarre about it is that some of the people I’m worried for are … imagine this … Republicans.
Georgia Republicans.
A few weeks ago, I had about as much affection for them as Jake and Elwood Blues had for Illinois Nazis, which is to say not much. But in the aftermath of a very close election in which Joe Biden beat Donald Trump by about 12,500 votes to become the first Democrat in 28 years to carry Georgia, our governor and our secretary of state have done us proud.
There has been tremendous pressure from Trump himself and his Trumpanzees to jigger the totals. South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham actually called Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and suggested he could/should get rid of some valid ballots containing votes for Biden.
Trump himself has been pressuring Governor Brian Kemp to do something to reverse the election result. He talked about the support he gave Kemp in 2018, and said he now regrets it.
What complicates the situation is that both Senate races in Georgia have gone to a January 5th runoff. Under normal circumstances, Republicans would be favored to win both. In this mess, who knows?
The problem is that the Republicans have sent in the Looney Tunes part of their campaign team. Attorney Lin Wood, from the wahabbi part of the Trumpanzees, is urging Republicans to boycott the Senate runoffs if security isn’t upgraded. Loony lawyer Sidney Powell is arguing the same team.
The problem is that Trump himself and his minions have raised the temperature so high that Republican officials like Raffensperger are getting death threats in a state that has way too many guns.
What’s his sin?
He wanted an accurate count, an election that could be trusted.
But both in 2016 and this year, Trump insisted that the only way it would be an honest election would be if he won. As I write this, Inauguration Day in 48 days away. We’re at a point where the only way we can feel safe is if the president is playing golf.
Imagine that.
So pray for January 20th to come quickly, and don’t forget to say a prayer that nobody goes after the honest Republicans in this state.
They need to be encouraged.
