Is Lindsey Graham insane?
There really isn’t any other way to explain it.
Earlier this year, the scenario looked good for Republicans. The party out of power usually gains in the midterm elections. It looked like a lock for the GOP to retake the House of Representatives and no worse than an even chance to take the Senate.
Then the Supreme Court issued its opinion in Dobbs v Jackson, repealing Roe v Wade and allowing individual states to abolish the right of women to have abortions within their borders.
When Republicans were trying to win the issue with fairness and logic, they accepted the idea of exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother. With the upper hand, though, in some states they removed the exceptions.
They argued in favor of federalism, saying that some states could keep abortion legal and others could ban it.
In fact, that’s what they had been saying for decades would happen if Roe were ever overturned.
Enter Graham.
The senior senator from South Carolina said what the anti-abortion crowd really wants, but Republicans have been trying to hide from voters.
He announced that if Republicans can gain control of Congress, they will pass a bill banning abortion in the entire United States.
Oops.
This doesn’t guarantee a good outcome for Democrats, but it certainly improves their chances.
