Nancy Mace isn’t some “woke” liberal speaking out against what Republicans are doing.
In fact, she is a conservative Republican representative from South Carolina who is strongly anti-abortion. So when she says the GOP is in huge trouble by staking so much on the abortion issue, this is no liberal feminist snowflake talking.
In an interview with ABC News, Mace said her party needs to moderate its position.
Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) predicted Republicans would “lose huge” in the next election if they do not tone down their anti-abortion extremism.
“I want us to find some middle ground,” she said. “I saw what happened after Roe v. Wade because I represent a very purple district, as purple as this dress. And I saw the sentiment change dramatically. We need to read the room on this issue.
“We just saw a fetal heartbeat bill signed in the dead of night recently in Florida,” she pointed out. “In my home state of South Carolina, there was a very small group of state legislators that filed a bill that would execute women who have abortions and gave more rights to rapists than women who’ve been raped.
“That is the wrong message heading into ’24. We’re going to lose huge if we continue down this path of extremities.”
It really is almost incomprehensible when you look at the numbers. Two-thirds of Americans believe that abortions should be legal in most instances, and the younger voters are, the more likely they support it as well as supporting rights for gays and lesbians.
Of course, numbers are even higher than that in supporting at least moderate forms of gun control.
They can suppress voters all they want and they can gerrymander all they want, but as younger voters make up more and more of the electorate, it will become more difficult for them to win elections.
These are not stupid people.
They know this.
It seems pretty obvious to me that they’re trying to accomplish as much as they can before slipping off into history. That’s why their control of the Supreme Court is so crucial to them. Donald Trump’s appointment of three young conservatives will leave the right wing with the upper hand there for a generation.
Control of many of the levers of government for the last generation has enabled them to shift many billions of dollars to their rich donors, and keeping taxes low on these types has enabled them to amass fortunes of previously unthinkable amounts.
So as the world changes, one thing seems sadly true.
It’s going to take a hundred years to recover from their extremism.
