I was sad when the U.S. women’s soccer team lost to Sweden Sunday, but not horribly so.
Let me explain.
I’m not anti-American. In fact, it probably pleases me more to see the women’s team succeed than the men’s. At least the women’s team has won the World Cup in my lifetime, something the men’s team will only do if I live a lot longer than I probably will.

In fact, the U.S. women won the World Cup in 2019 and 2015, and back-to-back wins for the American men could only happen if football were outlawed in Europe and South America.
Yes, the U.S. team was going for its third consecutive World Cup, something that has never been done. And let’s face it, there would be something horribly wrong if someone asked a trivia question in a pub in Manchester and the question was what is the only country to win three consecutive World Cups.
“U-S-A, U-S-A!”
I’m convinced there has never been a more obnoxious cheer at a sports event.
Actually, losing out in its drive for a third victory might actually help the U.S. team build toward the 2027 competition. It won’t be quite as far off as the current one in Australia and New Zealand, but it’s still no short hop to South Africa.
The men’s Mondiale the year before will actually be the second one held in the United States. I actually took my family to one of the matches in the 1994 competition. We saw Cameroon play Sweden at the Rose Bowl. I remember it being fascinating, but for the life of me, I have no memory of who won.
I looked it up. A 2-2 tie, although Sweden did go on to a third-place finish.
Actually, the one thing that made me really angry about the U.S. loss yesterday was that it made Donald Trump so happy. America’s Moron had been humiliated in 2019 when the champion U.S. team refused to make a visit to the White House. Megan Rapinoe said that as long as Trump was president, “I’m not going to the fucking White House.”
Trump took a return shot after the loss to Sweden.

Sorry if this sounds disrespectful, but it’s the only thing that comes to mind.
What a douchebag.
