DELAY, DELAY, DELAY IS NOT WHAT INNOCENT PEOPLE DO

This won’t be a particularly long post.

Just some food for thought and one very basic question.

When I was a kid in school and learning about civics, one thing I remember was that our justice system was intended to be slanted toward the rights of the accused. We learned that it was better to let 10 guilty people go free than to wrongly convict one innocent person.

One of the most important rights was that someone accused of a crime had a right to a timely trial. In fact, a defendant had the right to go to trial within 90 says unless he or she waived that right.

It made a lot of sense. Especially if someone couldn’t afford bail and had to sit in jail awaiting their trial, without the right to a timely trial, the government could just let the accused rot in jail.

After all, an innocent defendant would be eager to make his case and get the entire experience behind him.

Right?

So there’s the food for thought.

Now the question.

What possible reason could Donald Trump, who insists he has done nothing wrong, have for trying to delay and delay ad infinitum?

Well …

We’re told that taking the Fifth Amendment and even refusing to testify cannot be taken as evidence of guilt. As I said earlier, we bend over backward to protect the rights of the accused.

But delaying going to trial for as long as possible?

That isn’t what innocent people do. That’s what mafiosos do. That’s what people who have no desire to be thought of us innocent do. All that matters to them is avoiding punishment.

So think about the question I asked.

What possible reason could Donald Trump, who insists he has done nothing wrong, have for trying to delay and delay ad infinitum?
