I don’t know if Democrats everywhere are panicking today, but the media sure has its panties in a bunch over President Biden’s lackluster performance in Thursday evening’s debate with Donald Trump.
I wouldn’t want to say I told you so, but I would still vote for Biden over Trump in a heartbeat. Still, the things I said in my post 11 days ago that the Democrats need to find a way past Biden are still true.
It will not be easy. They will need to convince Biden to step aside and they also need to come up with a nominee who won’t offend African-Americans and women when they look past Kamala Harris.
There is no perfect choice.
But there is a damn good one.
Michelle Obama.
I’m pretty sure there’s no part of the Democratic Party that wouldn’t like her, and ditto for non-racist independent voters. She is well-educated and highly intelligent and is young enough at age 60 for a strong contrast with Trump.
It’s true she has never held public office, but neither had Trump. In addition, she spent eight years in the White House as he husband’s top unofficial advisor. Trump’s greatest weakness is on women’s issues, and she could definitely take advantage there. In addition, she would have the best possible advisor in the 44th president.
There is one problem, but I think it can be overcome.
She does not want to run for office of any sort.
But imagine people coming to you and saying you need to save the United States from Trump and the Christian Nationalists. That would be awfully difficult to reject.
I have no doubt in my mind she could beat Trump. She is everything he isn’t, and if two-thirds of Democrats aren’t excited about Biden, she could turn that around in a New York minute.
Add someone like Andy Beshear or Josh Shapiro as vice president and promise Kamala Harris the next Supreme Court seat and it’s off to the races.
