Has there ever been a time in American history when there were so many out-and-out lunatics on one side of the political equation?
Was there ever a time when an American president had a bromance with a Russian dictator and also spoke so highly of at least three other strongmen in other countries and was so negative toward our actual allies?
Could you have imagined a time when an actual criminal, one who also was known for a lack of business ethics, could be elected president once and have nearly a 50-50 chance of winning again?
The part of it I have the most trouble with is the open racism that seems to be infecting tens of millions of Americans thanks to Donald Trump’s rants against certain immigrants, nearly all of them people of color. In fact, just about the only thing Trump hasn’t done is use what we now call the n-word.
He has openly called their homelands “shithole countries.”
And he isn’t even the worst, the weirdest, the wackiest of the folks populating the party of Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower and Ronald Reagan.
Whether it’s Marjorie Taylor Greene or Lauren Boebert, Matt Gaetz or Ted Cruz or Mike Lindell with his pillows with the subliminal Nazi message, this is not your father’s Republican Party.
The number 14 is shorthand for a racist 14-word slogan and 88 refers to an abbreviation of “Heil Hitler” since H is the eighth letter of the alphabet. Lindell denies any racist connection but says he will not change the price to avoid the symbolism.
Then there’s MTG, who became famous a few years back for Jewish Space Lasers and the Gazpacho Police. Just last week, the Georgia representative accused the federal government of controlling the weather in such a way as to make Hurricanes Helene and Milton devastate red states.
Trump himself seems to be getting crazier day by day. It was his rant about Haitian immigrants, who are in the country legally, eating the pets of the people of Springfield, Ohio, that sent him around the bend.
Even after his running mste, J.D. Vance, admitted he had concocted the story himself, Trump and Vance never admitted to lying.
It really is difficult to understand why the polls still show the race as being almost even. There is simply no way 50 percent of voters are hardcore Trumpanzees. I’ve got to think there are some voters who aren’t fond of the former president but don’t want to see a black woman in the White House.
I just hope enough voters will understand what is really at stake in this election.
If that happens, I don’t think Trump can win.
