“After (Monica Palmer) filed her affidavit asking to rescind her vote, (Jonathan) Kinloch accused her and (William) Hartmann of bowing to pressure from the Republican Party and the White House, which has waged a legal campaign seeking to overturn the results of the election (in Michigan).“
Think about this for a minute. That quote is from a story in the Washington Post, discussing efforts by the Trump campaign to overturn the results of the recent presidential election in which more than 150 million people voted and Joe Biden won by a fairly significant margin.
Overturn it?
You betcha.
Donald Trump lost the popular vote by 3 million last time and somehow convinced himself he really won. Remember? He said there had been more than 3 million illegal votes for Hillary Clinton.
And technically, at least, he really did win because of the quirks of the electoral college.
This time, though, he lost the popular vote by a growing margin that is nearing 6 million, and he lost the electoral vote by the same margin he won by in 2016.
It was close in a couple of the states he lost, but not enough to swing the election unless he can get state governments to go against the vote totals and support him. The most ridiculous of those is Michigan, where he lost by more than 150,000 votes.
In 2016, Trump carried Michigan by less than 11,000 votes, and of course that was perfectly legitimate to the GOP.
In states like Georgia, Wisconsin and North Carolina, Republicans have bragged about suppressing African-American voters. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said in 2018 that if they didn’t suppress votes, Republicans would never win another election.
So of course Trump’s lawyers insist that it’s Democrats who are breaking the laws. America’s Zaniest Attorney, the demented Rudy Giuliani, put on quite a show in Washington Thursday.
“This is real! It is not made up!” Giuliani said. “There is nobody here that engages in fantasy. I have tried a hundred cases. I prosecuted some of the most dangerous criminals in the world. I know crimes. I can smell them.”
Guiliani was so overheated and was sweating so profusely that what appeared to be hair dye was running down both his cheeks.
Sidney Powell, another member of Trump’s legal team, falsely claimed the president won the election.
“We are going to clean this mess up now. President Trump won by a landslide,” she said. “We are going to prove it and we are going to reclaim the United States of America.”
Well, I don’t think we ever expected getting rid of Trump would be easy.
But it is necessary.
