IF TRUMP WANTS A GRACEFUL EXIT, TRY THIS ON FOR SIZE

“Mea culpa. Mea culpa. Mea maxima culpa.”

File this one under the heading of It’ll Never Happen but It Should.

I find myself thinking the last couple of days about what if anything Donald Trump could do to redeem himself. Don’t get me wrong, there’s no way he’s going to change the fact that he’s been impeached again.

But I think there ‘s something he could say that would prevent his conviction by the Senate and possibly even let people of good will allow him to go gently into that good night.

It’ll never happen, but he could basically apologize.

It might go something like this:

“My fellow Americans,

“Being elected president in 2016 was the most wonderful thing that ever happened to me. Having the chance to lead this great nation was more amazing than I could have ever imagined. I did the best I could, and while I won’t go into them here, I believe I accomplished some very good things.

“I wanted very badly to be re-elected in 2020 and I campaigned very hard. Seeing many of the same wonderful crowds I had seen four years earlier led me to believe I would win again. When I didn’t, it was such a shock to me that for a while I didn’t believe it could possibly have happened.

“It was the greatest disappointment of my life and for a while I was in denial. One of the lessons I learned from my father is that you never give up, you never stop fighting until there really is no chance of winning. In fighting as hard as I could, I did some things that were wrong.

“As much as I wish it were true, I know that the election was not stolen from me. I know that I lost and that President-elect Biden won. I should have conceded the election long before this, but I concede it today and wish Joe Biden and Kamala Harris the best as they go forward to lead our nation.

“I apologize for anything I have done to stir up my supporters and urge all of them to cease and desist. Please, no more violence.

“Serving for years as your president has been the highlight of my life. Thank you and God Bless America.”

It will never happen, but wouldn’t it be wonderful if it did?

No whining, no blaming others.

I guarantee he would not be convicted by the Senate, and at this point, that would be a pretty good end for Trump.
