Poor Donald.
Those radical leftists in the Federal Bureau of Investigation just will not leave him alone.
That sentence from former president Trump’s statement in reaction to an FBI raid searching for presidential documents that should not have been taken from Washington has three errors (or misstatements) in it.
First, his “beautiful home.”
When Trump purchased Mar-a-Lago, he had to agree that he would not use the club as his personal residence. Of course he blatantly broke that agreement. Still, it’s not legally his home.
Second, “under siege.”
Serving a search warrant and executing it doesn’t even remotely resemble a siege. A siege is when the siegers surround the siegees so that food and other supplies can’t get in to them. Sieges generally last days, weeks or months. They don’t take place in the course of one day.
Third, “occupied.”
Are the FBI agents still at Trump’s resort? Have they been eating there and sleeping there? Or did they serve the warrant and leave once they either found or didn’t find the documents? Occupying means staying.
If there’s one thing that’s completely predictable — but also a bit disgusting — it’s the reaction from Republicans.
“I’ve seen enough,” said Congressman Kevin McCarthy. “The Department of Justice has reached an intolerable state of weaponized politicization.”
House Republicans are attacking President Biden, saying this is all a political attack on a once and future opponent. Of course one could argue that the reason they say that is because that’s what they would do in a similar situation.
The problem is that there is no conceivable legitimate reason for Trump to take boxes and boxes of official documents. He had no right to have them in his possession, so he has no legitimate complaint against the FBI for coming to take them back. This was a lot worse than Hillary Clinton’s emails or Hunter Biden’s laptop.
Trump is poison, and whether he wins or loses, something will suffer.
If he wins, our democracy will be badly damaged.
If he loses, it’s big trouble for Republicans.
I know which one I’m rooting for.
