DESANTIS’ GRANDSTAND PLOY A REAL EYE-OPENER

Remember when Republicans actually used to participate in governance?

If you don’t, OK. It has been quite a while.

Lately it seems as though all they want to do is, as they say, own the libs.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, aka Trump without the obesity or the combover, is the latest one out of the clown car. He went to south Texas, got two planeloads of undocumented immigrants and flew them to Martha’s Vineyard off the Massachusetts coast and dropped them off there.

Say what?

That’s right. The governor of Florida went all the way to Texas, not even an adjacent state, and (kidnapped, coerced, tricked, etc.) Latin American migrants into getting onto planes for which the taxpayers of Florida were footing the bill. He then flew them more than 2,000 miles to Massachusetts, essentially invading that state and dropping off the migrants.

Just another MAGA hero.

DeSantis is the perfect MAGA guy these days. He really cares only about two things other than owning the libs.

First is fighting the culture wars,

Second is lowering taxes on the mega-wealthy.

Sum all of it up by saying there are plenty of folks on the far right who don’t believe there should even be a government, and you’re got a political party that essentially wants to stop anyone from governing. Senate Minority League Mitch McConnell has said if the GOP regains control of the Senate in the midterm elections, he won’t allow any Supreme Court nominations in the next two years.

DeSantis isn’t Trump, which has both advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, he could probably not be counted on to be in Vladimir Putin’s vest pocket. On the other, he could very well be Trump without the incompetence or lunacy.

But 2024 isn’t the important election. What happens this year will go a long way, either for better or for evil, in determining what happens in 2024.

The party in power rarely does well in the second year of a presidency, but this year might be different. The Supreme Court’s radical repeal of Roe v. Wade in the infamous Dobbs decision earlier this year has shown just how far right the Court can go, especially with Clarence Thomas saying there was nothing to keep them from revisiting decisions on birth control and same-sex marriage.

If folks on the left don’t stand up for their rights, especially with Sen. Lindsey Graham saying Congress needs to pass a nationwide abortion ban, then everything might fall apart.

President DeSantis?

Or perhaps even worse, President Don Jr.

The choice is yours.
