It’s wonderful not having to watch political stuff, news or commentary on television.
Say what you like about the internet, and there is both good and bad to say, but being able to pick and choose what I watch after the fact does wonders for my blood pressure. I subscribe to two of the best newspapers in the country — the New York Times and the Washington Post — and magazines like The Atlantic and The Economist.
I didn’t watch one minute of the Republican debate the other night, but I saw clips and analysis the next day.
If the debate showed one thing, it’s that if there is some reason Donald Trump can’t be the nominee, there’s nobody currently in the field who will be an acceptable second choice.
Perhaps the strangest thing was that with Trump not present, the others would have ganged up on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. After all, for most of the last year, he has been running second to Trump. The problem is, the more people see of DeSantis, the less they like.
He’s fading fast.
The flavor of the night was businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, trying to appeal to the MAGA crowd by seeming like a young Trump.
He’s got two things he won’t be able to overcome, though.
First, he doesn’t love Jesus.
He doesn’t even love Republican God-wants-you-to-be-rich Jesus.
Ramaswamy is a Hindu.
Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell must be spinning in their graves.
They won’t like the other problem either.
He’s not white.
Too many of the others were just dull white guys who have been around forever.Mike Pence did a good job on Trump’s Insurrection Day, but aside from that, he’s Hoosier Dan Quayle without the good golf game.
One candidate did stand out from the rest. Nikki Haley looked smart and tough, but tell that to any Republican and you’ll hear the problem.
“EWWWWWW!!!!! SHE’S A GUURRLL!”
Gonna be a long campaign.
