WHEN THEY’RE SELF-OBSESSED, THEY’RE REPUBLICANS

“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”

“The buck stops here.”

“Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”

Those are quotes from three 20th century presidents.

“I am not a crook.”

“Government isn’t the solution, it’s the problem.”

“I don’t take responsibility at all.”

Those are quotes from three later presidents.

Those six quotes may not be the most memorable of the six presidents, but most people who follow politics and history will be able to identify all six just from those quotes.

Of course the three quotes that inspire people were from Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman and John Kennedy. Without arguing whether. they were great presidents or not, it’s clear they had positive effects on their country and their times.

The other three? Not so much.

Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump all did their best to destroy our trust in government.

Nixon showed us we couldn’t trust our government, while Reagan said our government couldn’t do anything right. And while this may sound somewhat facetious, Trump is what might result if Nixon and Reagan had a child. Especially if Benito Mussolini was somewhere on the family tree.

It’s truly frightening how many people are so disaffected that they’re willing to forgive Trump everything from theft to insurrection. There has never been a candidate for president — let alone an actual president — whose life has been lived so far outside the law. And when he does campaign, all he ever talks about is the injustices he suffers at the hands of the system.

Everything that happens for the better in the world is due to him.

Everything bad is someone else’s fault.

People who believe that are more than disaffected.

Theyre either stupid or crazy.

Just like Trump.
