From Bibles to talking trout, Trump grifting away

“Who does that?”

Barack Obama asked a very good question while discussing Donald Trump with an audience in Pittsburgh the other day.

What kind of candidate for president sells merchandise at his rallies — special sneakers, nonexistent trading cards, hundred-thousand dollar watches and Christian Bibles with his name on them?

Trump was already a unique candidate in that he got where he did by campaigning almost exclusively negatively. He calls his opponents mentally ill, senile, criminals or even pure evil.

He has assembled one of the most bizarre coalitions ever, getting votes from the poorly educated, xenophobes, racists, anti-government types and Christian nationalists.

And he sells to all of them.

In the movie “The Usual Suspects,” there is a quote at the end of the film that sums up the whole point.

“The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he did not exist.”

Well, the greatest trick Trump ever pulled was convincing people he was anything more than a third-rate grifter.

Mike, that statement is offensive and inaccurate toward Trump.

All right, I’ll change it. The greatest trick Trump ever pulled was convincing people he was anything more than a second-rate grifter.

Better, but …

All right, all right. The greatest trick Trump ever pulled was convincing people he was anything but a world-class grifter.

Not a week goes by that Trump doesn’t come up with some new grift to separate those who support him ffrom their money. The most recent one is cryptocurrency, wgich I would be surprised if one in 10 Trump voters has any concept of wjhat it is and how it works.

His people are far more likely to find a use for a very different grift.

Trumpy Trout.

No fake, it’s real.

When I first heard of this, I thought there was no way it was real. It must be some kind of joke on what the poorly educated would buy.

But no, the video above is an actual advertisement from right-wing news site Newsmax.

And even though he doesn’t say anything about it, you just know Trump okayed it and is getting a significant cut every time one is sold.

Ain’t America grand?

As President Obama asked, who does that?
