A solution to Maine Democrats’ Senate problem

I need to start this post by saying I am absolutely not kidding.

If Maine Democrats really want a nominee to replace Graham Platner, one who can defeat Sen. Susan Collins, in November, I have the answer for them.

Stephen King.

Yes, he has never run for office before. Yes, he will be 79 years old before election day. Both of those are legitimate questions, but neither should be enough to keep Democrats from an excellent solution to what could turn into a desperate problem very quickly.

First, the inexperience. King has been in the spotlight for most of his adult life and with the exception of substance abuse 20-some years ago, has never had a scandal.

Second, his age. One year younger than Donald Trump, but neither obese or showing any signs of mental decline. He could and should say right off that he will under no circumstances run for a second term. He could also say he would resign in mid-term if he does decline, allowing the governor to appoint a replacement in two years or four or whenever.

Make no mistake about it. The next two years are really all that matter, especially if Democrats are able to gain control of the Senate in the midterms. King can be part of blocking Trump’s worst excesses.

The next two years would give Mainers a chance to sort out who they want to be their junior senator in a post-Trump era.

A short post? Absolutely, but I think I’ve made my point.

King up.

Collins down.

It’s that simple.
